Alliance for Physics Excellence (APEX)
The University of Alabama is a partner in a five-year, $8 million grant from the National Science Foundation to Alabama A&M University to enhance physics teaching in Alabama's high schools. The Alliance for Physics Excellence (APEX) program aims to integrate the latest teaching practices into secondary physics programs via pre-service and in-service teacher education, ultimately impacting a quarter of the physics teachers in the state and more than 40,000 students. UA's role includes scholarships/stipends (up to $16K/yr) and preparation of pre-service physics teachers, and research on effective teaching and learning practices of in-service physics teachers. Dr. Dennis Sunal, Dept. of Curriculum &Instruction, and Dr. J.W. Harrell, Physics & Astronomy, are PI and co-PI, respectively, of the $1.6 million sub award to UA.
